Without Step 1

Can I Apply to Residency Without Step 1?

In short, the answer to the common question of, “Can I apply to residency without Step 1?” – is yes, you can.

Although programs are more likely to consider applicants with both Step 1 and Step 2, they may still consider you, as long as you have passed Step 2 CK.

For example, many IMGs (except Caribbean grads/students) take Step 2 CK before Step 1. Coming from overseas, especially India, applicants are more prepared clinically. Therefore they feel more ready for Step 2 CK before Step 1.

Thus, they may apply without Step 1, having only passed Step 2. Of course, it is best to have your Steps completed as early as possible in the application process in order to facilitate the best chances for receiving interviews.

Applying Without Step 1

In summary, you can apply without Step 1 as long as you have already passed Step CK. It wouldn’t make sense to apply without either.
