2026 Main Residency Match Highlights and Data
Match Day stands as one of the most defining moments in a medical student’s journey, the culmination of years of relentless dedication, sacrifice, and growth. In a single envelope, countless late nights, board exams, and clinical rotations find their resolution, closing one extraordinary chapter while opening the door to the next. Explore the NRMP® 2026 Main Residency Match highlights below.
Let’s take a look at the 2026 Match Highlights:
Record-Breaking Participation:
-
The largest Main Residency Match in the organization’s history. More than 53,000 applicants registered, over 44,000 positions were on the table and programs spanned more than 6,800 tracks across the country.
-
Of the 53,373 applicants registered, 48,050 certified a rank order list, up 842 from last year. Among those, 38,354 matched to a PGY-1 position, a 1.8 percent increase from 2025. Combined with PGY-2 placements, the Match filled 41,482 positions out of 44,344 offered, landing at an overall fill rate of 93.5 percent.
2026 IMG Match Trends
- Non-U.S. citizen IMGs had a harder road. Despite growing by 479 to 11,944 active applicants, their PGY-1 match rate dropped to 56.4 percent which is a five-year low. The divide within this group is striking: those requiring visa sponsorship matched at just 54.4 percent, while permanent residents not needing sponsorship hit a five-year high of 67.9 percent. he NRMP® flagged recent federal immigration policy changes as a likely factor shaping these outcomes.
The numbers are in — 9,682 IMGs are set to join the U.S. healthcare system this year! This is a huge achievement, and we couldn’t be more excited for everyone who matched.
Here’s how IMGs performed by specialty:
- Internal Medicine – 3,448 Non-U.S. IMGs | 1,060 U.S. IMGs
- Family Medicine – 962 Non-U.S. IMGs | 585 U.S. IMGs
- Pediatrics – 684 Non-U.S. IMGs | 213 U.S. IMGs
- Psychiatry – 222 Non-U.S. IMGs | 177 U.S. IMGs
- Surgery Prelim – 218 Non-U.S. IMGs | 72 U.S. IMGs

Other Specialties Worth Watching
Emergency Medicine bounced back further from the dip it experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2022 and 2023. This year’s 3,198 positions, 130 more than in 2025 achieved a 95.6 percent fill rate. Though that figure is down 2.3 percentage points from last year, the total number of applicants matching into the specialty rose 1.8 percent, suggesting continued interest and recovery.
Psychiatry had a strong showing, offering 2,516 positions and achieving a 97.4 percent fill rate. The specialty added 30 programs this year, expanding its available positions by 128. A total of 2,451 positions were filled, and while 65 spots went unfilled, up from just eight the prior year, the overall trajectory remains positive. Over the past five years, match rates for U.S. DO seniors and non-U.S. IMGs in Psychiatry have climbed steadily, even as rates for U.S. MD seniors have fluctuated.
Looking Ahead
The 2026 Match paints a picture of a medical training system that is largely resilient and growing, but one with real fault lines worth watching, particularly around Family Medicine recruitment, the impact of immigration policy on non-citizen IMG applicants, and how specialty-specific fill rates will respond to continued expansion in training slots. For the thousands of medical students and graduates who learned their placements today, however, the immediate story is a simpler and more joyful one: the start of the next chapter in their medical careers.
